Helene Fuld College of Nursing in Harlem

Helene Fuld College of Nursing (a private, not-for-profit institution located in Harlem) has been educating nurses for over sixty years. Helene Fuld provides upward mobility to a largely minority population and provides critically needed registered nurses to medically underserved geographical areas. Ninety-four percent of currently enrolled students are minority; 88% are female; and 75% have dependent children.

Helene Fuld’s purpose is to provide an opportunity, through a career ladder approach, for men and women to enhance their education and improve their nursing practice. It provides continued leadership in non-traditional nursing education with an emphasis on educating licensed practical nurses to advance to the associate degree registered nurse level; offers opportunities to men and women of diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds and to those who might otherwise have been excluded from career advancement; prepares graduates who benefit from an increased level of expertise; and provides a base for further professional education.

Board meets six times a year, alternating locations between the offices of the College’s counsel (midtown) and the College (East 120th Street). Financial commitment is modest. Current board (which is listed on website) includes a retired nurse, a Hackley math teacher, the COO of St Vincent Hospital, the CFO of Mt Sinai, and several retirees, among others.
